I know we got a couple brains on here.

Im dealing with a linear inequality.

-5(x-4) >/= 3[4-(x+4)]

The final answer is 15/2. Ive gone through the order of operations and everything... I just cant figure out how to get there.

I wouldnt be asking if I wasnt in a pickle. Most of my friends are watching the SB so I cant ask them, and Im stuck here with this bullshit.

Ill keep trying to figure it out, but if someone could help me out here, Id be eternally grateful.

what in the fuck is a cranker jack box? your mother should be shot for giving birth to you.
Hey HustledWhore, tell your mother to stop calling me! You're over 18 now so shes not gonna get anymore child support! That plus the fact that I gave her a choice between my dick and child support...and she chose the dick!

-5(x-4) ≥ 3[4-(x+4)]
unless there is a flaw in my basic algebra,

using the distributive property you should get

-5X + 20 ≥ 3[4 -X- 4]
-5X + 20≥ 12 - 3x -12
-5X + 20≥ -3X

2 adding 3X to both sides of the inequality and subtracting 20 from both sides
-2X ≥ -20

seems to me I remember that when solving an inequality, if you have to multiply or divide by a negative, it changes the inequality.

so solving for X by dividing by -2
results in
X≤ 10

4 Check the solution using 10 for X

-5(10-4) ≥ 3[4 -(10 + 4)]
-5(6)≥ 3 [4 - 14]
-30 ≥ 3(-10)
-30≥-30 true
checking with 9
-5 (9- 4) ≥ 3[4 - (9 + 4)]
-5(5) ≥ 3[4 -13]
-25≥ 3(-9)
-25 ≥ -27 true

checking with 11
-5(11- 4) ≥ 3 [4 - (11 + 4)]
-5 (7)≥ 3[4 -15]
-35≥ 3(-11)
-35 ≥ -33 False

So X≤ 10 is the solution for the inequality.

15/2 falls in the range but it is not the final solution.

Thanks alot milffan. I really do appreciate the help, but Im still confused. I did the distributive property and everything you did and not sure where I went wrong. I am still wondering how you got 4-X-4 at the top. So many rules...I may be forgetting one. Thats where I thought I screwed up....the inner quotations, but I couldnt figure out where I went wrong.

And it says 15/2 in the back of the book. Not saying you are wrong, but I need to know how it comes up with that because whatever formula got that answer is the formula Penn State math uses.

Ill ask my teach before class and just hope I can pick it up before we take the test.

Thanks again.

I'm with Milffan. I can't see how they got 15/2, and I've done it a few times in my head and on paper.

1) Believe it or not every once in awhile answers at the back of the book CAN be wrong. I taught Algebra for 20 years and god knows how many hours I spent in math classes during my own days as a student. I'd say I found a wrong answer in a math book about 2 or 3 times a year. Publishers can make mistakes.

2) about the 4 - X - 4. This is a common error in Algebra

Look at what was in the parenthesis...... 3[4 - (X + 4)]

The subtraction is of EVERYTHING inside the parenthesis. So when the contents of the parenthesis are taken out, it becomes
X - 4

thus the contents of the brackets became 3[4 - X - 4]. To prove it, Put in number for X.....lets say 1

3[4 - (1+ 4)[= 3[4- (5)]= 3(-1) = -3. Now do it my way 3[4 - 1 - 4) = 3(-1) = -3. Same thing
