Thanks alot milffan. I really do appreciate the help, but Im still confused. I did the distributive property and everything you did and not sure where I went wrong. I am still wondering how you got 4-X-4 at the top. So many rules...I may be forgetting one. Thats where I thought I screwed up....the inner quotations, but I couldnt figure out where I went wrong.
And it says 15/2 in the back of the book. Not saying you are wrong, but I need to know how it comes up with that because whatever formula got that answer is the formula Penn State math uses.
Ill ask my teach before class and just hope I can pick it up before we take the test.
Thanks again.
1) Believe it or not every once in awhile answers at the back of the book CAN be wrong. I taught Algebra for 20 years and god knows how many hours I spent in math classes during my own days as a student. I'd say I found a wrong answer in a math book about 2 or 3 times a year. Publishers can make mistakes.
2) about the 4 - X - 4. This is a common error in Algebra
Look at what was in the parenthesis...... 3[4 - (X + 4)]
The subtraction is of EVERYTHING inside the parenthesis. So when the contents of the parenthesis are taken out, it becomes
X - 4
thus the contents of the brackets became 3[4 - X - 4]. To prove it, Put in number for X.....lets say 1
3[4 - (1+ 4)[= 3[4- (5)]= 3(-1) = -3. Now do it my way 3[4 - 1 - 4) = 3(-1) = -3. Same thing
